Being an entrepreneur is a journey filled with ups, downs, and countless lessons. For mothers, balancing the responsibilities of parenting while growing a business brings its own unique challenges. Mckayla, the owner of The Comma Mama Co, shares her inspiring story of launching and growing her business while raising three children. Here’s how she’s navigated the journey and her advice for fellow entrepreneurial parents.
Mckayla’s journey began while juggling multiple jobs and attending college. Realizing motherhood’s demands and childcare’s financial burden, she decided to start her own business. Her love for writing and a growing interest in SEO led her to establish The Comma Mama Co., a company dedicated to helping businesses improve their online presence through blogging and search engine optimization.
“I knew I wanted to write,” Mckayla shares. “My husband came up with the name The Comma Mama Co., combining my passion for writing and my role as a mother. It’s been the perfect blend.”
Starting a business as a new mother is no easy feat, and Mckayla’s journey has been a testament to perseverance. From working around her children’s schedules to handling client work during nap times, she has built a thriving business despite the challenges.
Mckayla highlights the importance of adapting and staying flexible: “Every time I’ve had a child, I’ve made small shifts in my business. Now that my youngest will soon be in daycare, I’m focusing on scaling The Comma Mama Co. and streamlining processes to grow further.”
One of Mckayla’s key strategies has been working with women-owned businesses, particularly other mothers. This focus has allowed her to connect more personally with her clients, creating an environment of trust and collaboration. “I enjoy getting to know my clients on a deeper level. Women and moms naturally relate to my brand, which has been a great fit for my business.”
For Mckayla, the joy of her work lies in two things: writing and seeing measurable results. Writing blog content for diverse industries keeps her work fresh and engaging while tracking growth metrics provides a sense of accomplishment.
“There’s nothing like looking at a chart and seeing the growth your work has achieved,” she explains. “It’s a reminder that the effort I’m putting in is making a tangible difference for my clients.”
Mckayla candidly shares one of her biggest challenges: believing she could do it all. Early in her business, she hesitated to invest in tools or services that could have streamlined her operations. Over time, she realized the importance of implementing systems to improve efficiency and client experience.
“Investing in the right tools, like HoneyBook for automation and Notion for organization, has been a game-changer,” she says. “It’s about focusing on what I do best and outsourcing the rest.”
For entrepreneurs, especially mothers, Mckayla offers this wisdom:
As Mckayla celebrates five years in business, she is excited about the future of The Comma Mama Co. With plans to grow her brand, improve systems, and deepen client relationships, she is a shining example of resilience and dedication.
