I think sometimes we assume that successful business owners had some kind of master plan from the beginning. That they knew exactly what they wanted to do and how they were going to get there.
Well, that certainly wasn’t the case for me.
I failed algebra in high school. The only reason I took an accounting class was because I needed the credit to graduate.
As it turned out, I loved accounting. I eventually became a CPA, and years later, I started MOD Ventures from my living room with the hope of making an extra $500 a month for my family.
I had no idea that little business would eventually grow into a seven-figure company.
And I share that because I think a lot of business owners put pressure on themselves to have everything figured out, when the reality is that most of us are learning as we go.
I’ve worked with entrepreneurs who are incredibly good at what they do, but they never necessarily set out to run a company. They started doing something they loved or something they were good at, and before they knew it, they had employees and a growing business to manage.
And that’s where things can get complicated.
Because knowing how to do the work isn’t quite the same as knowing how to run the business.
You may be great at serving your customers, but that doesn’t mean you automatically know how to read your financial reports or determine whether you can afford to hire someone.
Those are things you have to learn, and there’s nothing wrong with getting help along the way.
That’s something I’ve had to recognize in my own business, too. As MOD Ventures has grown, I’ve had to change how I lead and become more comfortable relying on other people.
I think one of the most important things you can do as a business owner is recognize when what got you this far isn’t necessarily what’s going to get you to the next stage.
And if the financial side of running your business is something you’re still trying to figure out, that’s where we can help.
At MOD Ventures, we work with business owners to help them understand their numbers so they can make more informed decisions about what’s next.
You don’t have to have all the answers. You just need to be willing to keep learning. Let’s make a plan.
