How Should I Use Digital Marketing to Promote My Business? Ft. Marc Young

January 29, 2025

This blog is based on a podcast interview featuring Gabrielle Luma, CPA, CGMA, and CEO of Mod Ventures, in conversation with Marc Young, CEO and founder of My Creative Inc., a digital marketing agency in Phoenix, AZ. The conversation explored actionable digital marketing insights that are particularly relevant for small and medium business owners.

Lesson 1: The Power of Authenticity in Digital Marketing

Authenticity is a cornerstone of effective digital marketing. Marc Young emphasized that today’s audiences are increasingly wary of overly polished or artificial content. He shared an important rule for capturing attention: you have only three seconds to make an impression before a viewer moves on. This is especially true on platforms like TikTok, YouTube Shorts, and Instagram Reels.

According to Marc:

“You’ve got to show who you really are. Pull the curtain back, show that you’re human, and be willing to be self-deprecating. It’s the quickest way to build rapport.”

This focus on realness is not just a trend—it’s a driving force behind the success of newer platforms like TikTok, which has built its brand on “realness.” Businesses should aim to connect emotionally with their audiences through relatable and genuine content.

Practical Tip: Avoid overproducing your videos or posts. Instead, let your personality and values shine through. Think of your content as a conversation with your audience, not a sales pitch.

Lesson 2: Inclusivity and Engagement Go Hand in Hand

Social media provides a unique opportunity for two-way communication between businesses and their audiences. Marc underscored the importance of engaging with followers, whether they’re sharing positive feedback or expressing concerns. Simply acknowledging someone’s comment—even if it’s negative—can go a long way in building trust.

“When someone replies to you, validating them or acknowledging that they’re there goes miles. You can actually win someone over who might have started out criticizing you,” Marc explained.

Inclusivity also extends to ensuring that marketing materials reflect diverse audiences. Authentic diversity in your visuals and messaging helps you connect with a broader audience.

Practical Tip: Regularly monitor and respond to comments on your social media posts. Additionally, review your marketing materials to ensure they reflect the diversity of the audiences you serve.

Lesson 3: Consistency Builds Legacy

If there’s one thing every business owner should remember about digital marketing, it’s this: consistency is key. As Marc pointed out, “You have to keep pedaling the bicycle.” Even if you’re not posting every day, a steady cadence of valuable content is essential for keeping your brand visible and relevant.

Marc shared an example of how platforms like Facebook evaluate content through what he calls an “Edge Ranker.” This system filters content to determine how widely it’s shared based on engagement. Posting consistently helps build trust with the platform and, in turn, widens your audience reach over time.

Gabrielle added her own experience, sharing how consistent posting on Instagram during the pandemic allowed her accounting firm to stand out:

“We had people coming to us saying, ‘You’re telling us more than our current CPA relationship is telling us.’”

Practical Tip: Set a posting schedule that works for you. Start with a realistic goal, such as one high-quality post per week, and adjust as you become more comfortable.

Key Takeaways for Small Business Owners

  1. Be Authentic: Let your brand’s personality shine through. Avoid overly polished content and focus on making emotional connections with your audience.
  2. Engage and Include: Respond to comments, validate feedback, and ensure your marketing materials reflect the diversity of your audience.
  3. Stay Consistent: Create a manageable posting schedule and stick to it. Over time, consistency builds credibility and expands your audience reach.

Digital marketing can seem overwhelming, but as Marc aptly pointed out, it’s also one of the most measurable and adaptable tools available to businesses today:

“Digital marketing is fascinating because you can experiment, get feedback from your audience, and take immediate action. That responsiveness wasn’t possible in traditional marketing.”

By focusing on authenticity, inclusivity, and consistency, small business owners can build strong connections with their audiences and create lasting impressions.
